October 11, 2008 Meeting

Presentation

The October meeting will be a follow-up on the September InstallFest. If you had any questions or concerns during or after your installation, this is a great time to bring them back for resolution. This will also be a good time for a general discussion of all things Linux and Open Source. There will probably also be a recap of last weeks Bar Camp that I know some when to.

We have added instructions on how to connect to the network while at an MLUG meeting (see the bottom of this page).

For presentation slides from previous meetings, click on the attachments tab at the top of this page, or visit the PastMeetings page.

Meeting Location

MCTS Administration Building 1942 N. 17th St Milwaukee

N43.03315 W87.55978 (Not the front door but close)

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are some views of the new location so you know what to look for the first time you come.

That's 17th and Fond du Lac; it's on the 23 bus route, and there's plenty of parking as well. The building is brown brick with Green trim. There is a decorative, black fence around the perimeter. The building is closed on Saturday, but we will have access. Dale Noll will monitor the door starting at Noon and let people in. After the meeting has started, you can still gain access by pressing the 'call' button to the right of the door. Identify yourself as an MLUG member. The Administration Building is the smaller of MCTS's two buildings. The other building is a bus garage.

The meeting room is 105, there will be signs.

Please note: You will not be able to get into the building before 12:00pm.

Here is a location map from MapQuest:

Driving directions:

From the West: I 94 East to 43 North. Get off at the Fond du Lac Ave/McKinley ramp. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Fond du Lac Ave. Follow Fond du Lac through next 2 sets of traffic lights. Turn Left onto Vine St and immediate right in to Lot.

From the North: Take I-43 South to the Fond du Lac Ave/McKinley ramp. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Fond du Lac Ave. Follow Fond du Lac through next set of traffic lights. Turn Left onto Vine St and immediate right in to Lot.

From the South: Take 43 North through the Marquette interchange. Get off at the Fond du Lac Ave/McKinley ramp. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Fond du Lac Ave. Follow Fond du Lac through next 2 sets of traffic lights. Turn Left onto Vine St and immediate right in to Lot.

Returning from Whence you came You can access both northbound and southbound I-43 from Fond du Lac Ave. You can also access westbound I-94 and eastbound I-794 from I-43 southbound.

The building is brown brick with Green trim. There is a decorative, black fence around the perimeter. The building is closed on Saturday, but we will have access. You can gain access by pressing the 'call' button to the right of the door. Identify yourself as an MLUG member. Please be aware that we have installed an audible alert on the door. When you hear the loud beeping, the door is unlocked and you may enter. The beep is strangely similar to the sound a bus makes when kneeling. Go figure.

The meeting room is 105, there will be signs.

Connecting to the network at MLUG meetings

Thanks to our meeting host Dale Noll, we have internet access at our meetings through MCTS' network. We also have wireless available (thanks Roger!); here are the particulars on how to set up for it.

We use DHCP, so make sure you do not have your network card set up with a specified IP address. The DHCP server on the network will assign one for you. Also make sure you have not entered a DNS server or gateway; DHCP will assign these as well (you may have to use a setting like "update name servers and search list via DHCP").

For wireless cards, set the operating mode to "managed", with an ESSID of "mlug" and no encryption.

You may want to set up a profile for these settings ahead of time; here are some examples from various distros:

For SUSE Linux, start YaST and go to System / Profile Manager. Make sure SCPM (the profile manager) is enabled, then add a new profile called "MLUG", switch to it, and change your network settings. Your new profile will be available on the boot screen when starting your machine by pressing F2; there is also a KDE applet called sumf that will let you change profiles on the fly.

For Ubuntu, select System / Administration / Networking from the desktop menu (the app's name is "network-admin"), then click the "Location" dropdown. Select "Create Location", then enter your settings.

For Debian "Sarge" with GNOME, select Applications / System Tools / Networking from the desktop menu (which also starts "network-admin"), then click "Network Profiles". Click "Save Current" to save and name your current configuration, then change the settings for MLUG and repeat the process.
