The Result of 10 Years of Experience: SuSE Linux 8.1 As part of our 10th anniversary we are proud to present the release of the new SuSE Linux 8.1 During the development of our latest Linux distribution we have focused particularly on further improvement of SuSE's advanced installation and configuration tools which make up the YaST program and the performance of the working system. As always, the development of SuSE Linux 8.1 has benefited from extensive feedback and suggestions from our customers, resulting in an unprecedented degree of technical maturity and user-friendly design. A Linux newcomer should be able to install the new SuSE Linux 8.1 on their PC within a very short time. Depending on the range of package selected for installation, you will have a fully configured Linux system in about 30 minutes. Even if you take some time to read the screen prompts displayed periodically during the various installation stages, you will rarely need much more time for the installation. Experienced users will be able to configure their system within less than 30 minutes. This includes the setup of users and the selection of a suitable screen resolution as well as the configuration of the Internet access, e-mail, printers, sound, and CD writer. SuSE Linux 8.1 contains substantial improvements and new features, many of which are the result of the feedback sent by our customers. The new YaST excels both in the graphical environment as well as on the command line. Improved hardware detection, the latest SuSE kernel, tested versions of important system components, the automated installation of external software, and the YaST Online Update YOU enable you to keep your system up to date. Other new features include the boot manager GRUB and CUPS as the default print system. Created by: TomFrancis last modification: Tuesday November 18, 2003 [17:15:27 UTC] by CharlesCollins |
